nutcracker: the alternative cabaret, opens this week in cardiff
The Alternative Cabaret at Wales Millennium Centre is sure to be an unforgettable
holiday celebration that defies tradition and We’ll be reviewing it later this week so keep a look out for our Thoughts on this Alternative Cabaret twist on the Christmas Classic that runs in the Weston Studio from 3 to 31 December.
Directed by Juliette Manon and featuring electrifying live music from Sam
Roberts and Heledd Watkins of HMS Morris, this promises to be a hilarious
night out filled with jaw-dropping performances. Featuring the fabulous
talents of Len Blanco, Diomede, Cadbury Parfait, Rotten Peach, and Daisy
Williams.
Crawl under the walls and scurry inside for a soiree of seductive burlesque,
daring aerial acts, gender-bending deviancy and a house band that will make
you squeak with delight. Proudly hosted by your overlord of the underground,
the voice of the vermin – The Rat King!
This is not your average Christmas show – it’s a night out you won’t soon forget.
Venture inside if you dare and put your toys down for an unforgettable evening
in Le Crack.
Heledd Watkins of HMS Morris says, “Composing the show has been a new
challenge for us because we’ve not done theatre composing to this scale
before, but we’re having so much fun! We’re getting to work in different genres
that we haven’t explored before, and injecting some HMS Morris into it, as well
as some other influences – but you’ll have to see the show to find out more!”
Director Juliette Manon adds: “This production sees ‘The Nutcracker’
reimagined through a trans lens to become a queer love story. In a world where
others constantly speak over us, this show is us taking up space, reclaiming and
creating our own narrative.
“Collaborating with the most EPIC company of multi-talented cabaret artists,
we’re examining queer lived experience in today’s society and celebrating
queer identity, love and family whilst spreading silly festive cheer, satire and
joy!”
Wales Millennium Centre’s Chief Creative and Content Officer, Graeme
Farrow, says: " Following last year’s sell-out success The First XXXmas: A Very
Naughty-tivity, we’re excited to welcome a fresh new team ready to sprinkle
their magic on our iconic venue. This is Christmas, but not as you know it!"
Cabaret is where the best in drag, burlesque, comedy, gig theatre, and so much more come alive!
