A Five-Star Triumph: Cinderella at New Theatre Cardiff

Pantomime holds a special place in British culture, particularly during the festive season. Originating from the Italian tradition of Commedia dell'Arte in the 16th century, pantomime has evolved into a quintessential part of British Christmas celebrations. It’s a unique theatrical experience known for its blend of music, slapstick comedy, and audience participation. The genre's ability to bring together performers from diverse backgrounds, including those outside of traditional theatre, is part of what makes it so beloved.

Mike Doyle, a New Theatre Cardiff panto Dame extraordinaire, returns this year as the Baroness. With 47 years in show business and 33 years in pantomime, Mike’s experience and comedic timing were evident, making his performance one of the highlights of the evening, particularly his gaff’s, cheeky one-liners and memorable Entrances (no pun intended) truly shows his devotion to pleasing the Crowd. Denquar Chupak, reprising her role as Cinderella, brought grace and a captivating singing voice that resonated with every member of the audience. Stephanie Webber, as the Fairy Godmother, added a magical touch with her spectacular voice and enchanting stage presence.

Jack Ryan, as Buttons, was a riotous force of nature. His cheeky charm and spontaneous humour had the audience in stitches, turning even the most mundane moments into comedic gold. His off-the-cuff crowd work demonstrated his unparalleled skill in reading the room and connecting with the audience.

A Production to Remember

Directed by the talented team at Crossroads Pantomimes, led by Michael Harrison, 'Cinderella' is a perfect blend of traditional pantomime elements and fresh, modern twists. The creative team behind last year’s success, 'Jac and the Beanstalk,' has delivered yet another hit, with stunning sets, dazzling costumes, and a script filled with wit and humour.

Theatre Director Stephan Stockton expressed his excitement, stating, “To continue the long tradition of Pantomime is one of the most important responsibilities that we at New Theatre Cardiff have. It's really exciting to have so much Welsh talent this year, in a Pantomime in the capital city of Wales. I'm really looking forward to working with this fantastic cast and delivering a traditional yet fresh pantomime to the people of Cardiff.”

Cultural Significance

Pantomime is more than just entertainment; it’s a beloved British institution that brings families together and creates lasting memories. Its roots in Commedia dell'Arte are reflected in the exaggerated characters and slapstick humour, but pantomime has grown to become a distinctly British tradition, especially around Christmas. The inclusion of well-known personalities from outside the theatre world adds a layer of excitement and accessibility, drawing in audiences who might not otherwise attend a live performance.

The New Theatre Cardiff’s production of 'Cinderella' exemplifies this tradition beautifully. It’s a show that captures the magic of pantomime, with a cast that brings energy, talent, and a genuine love for their craft to the stage.
