Pontypool: A Riveting, Fresh Masterpiece of Welsh Theatre

The Wales Millennium Centre has once again outdone itself with its latest production, "Pontypool". This stage adaptation of Tony Burgess's original radio play, which inspired the 2008 cult horror film, is nothing short of a tour de force. Directed by the talented Dan Phillips and adapted for the stage by Hefin Robinson, this production takes the audience on a suspenseful and thrilling journey that turns the zombie genre on its head.

A Gripping Tale

"Pontypool" follows the story of Radio DJ Grant Mazzy, played brilliantly by Lloyd Hutchinson. Once the king of the airwaves, Mazzy’s big mouth and ego have relegated him to Beacon Radio, a small station in Pontypool, nestled in the South Wales valleys. On a snowy St Dwynwen’s Day, Mazzy and his team prepare for another routine breakfast show. However, the mundane quickly turns to mayhem as reports of riots and incoherent crowds begin to trickle in, plunging the town into chaos. Mazzy's struggle to remain on air and make sense of the pandemonium is both gripping and heart-wrenching.

Stellar Performances

The cast’s performances are nothing short of spectacular. Victoria John delivers a compelling portrayal of Rhiannon Briar, while Mali O’Donnell shines as Megan Davies in a challenging role. Ioan Hefin as Dr. Harry Phillips and Carwyn Jones as Ken Loney bring depth and nuance to their roles. The voiceovers, including the unexpected but brilliant Di Botcher, add an extra layer of immersion, drawing the audience further into the story. Each actor brings their character to life with such authenticity that you are completely absorbed by their experiences.

Innovative Direction and Sound Design

Dan Phillips’ direction is masterful, guiding the cast through a complex narrative with finesse and creativity. The immersive sound design by Ben Samuels is a standout feature, elevating the production to new heights. The clever use of sound not only enhances the tension but also makes the audience feel as though they are part of the unfolding drama. This auditory experience is both chilling and mesmerizing, a true testament to the power of effective sound design.

Exceptional Staging and Management

The staging and management of "Pontypool" deserve high praise. The set design perfectly captures the claustrophobic atmosphere of a small radio station amidst a crisis. The transition from normalcy to chaos is seamless, pulling the audience into the escalating tension. The efforts of the Company Stage Manager, Garrin Clarke, are evident in the smooth execution of each scene, ensuring a flawless performance from start to finish.

A Must-See Production

"Pontypool" is a must-see for anyone who appreciates innovative and unconventional theatre. This production challenges the norms of the zombie genre, offering a fresh and thought-provoking perspective. The blend of suspense, stellar performances, and exceptional direction makes it an unforgettable experience.
